Jackfruit

Chiropractic Miami FL JackfruitWho loves jackfruit? I was recently introduced to jackfruit at a vegan restaurant in Miami as a "pulled pork" alternative and I was HOOKED! As a vegetarian, this is now a staple in my home because of its versatility in cooking! But I had no idea there were so many benefits to jackfruit!

What is Jackfruit

Jackfruit is, as the name implies, a fruit and it is actually in the fig and breadfruit family. Each tree can grow up to 200 jackfruit and each jackfruit can grow up to 100 pounds! Interestingly, it is grown on a tree which is naturally pest-resistant so it requires no pesticides, etc. It is also super easy to grow so I will definitely be growing one of these when we move to our home! When cooked, it has a consistency very similar to pork or chicken. It is a bit softer but absorbs flavors really well. It is not particularly high in protein, maybe just in the seeds, but it is a great alternative to barbeque meat dishes because of its consistency.

Benefits of Jackfruit

  • Seeds of jackfruit may help lower LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol)
  • High in potassium which is important in regulating blood pressure
  • Contain phytochemicals which have antioxidant properties and can counter free radicals (cancer cells)
  • Great source of Vitamin C & magnesium and other minerals and vitamins
  • Can be made sweet as a dessert or meaty alternative

Dangers of Jackfruit

Really none, however if you have a latex or birch pollen allergy, as week as chronic kidney disease, you might want to avoid jackfruit due to its high potassium content.

My Favorite Way to Eat Jackfruit

I like purchasing from the Jackfruit Company which packages them plain or flavored. My favorite is the barbeque flavor which is a bit on the "hot" or spicy side but if I was to cook the plain one, here is how I make it:

Ingredients

  • Half an onion
  • One package jackfruit
  • Avocado oil
  • Minced garlic
  • Salt & pepper
  • Rosemary

Directions

  1. Sautee onion and garlic in avocado oil
  2. Add in jackfruit
  3. Season with salt, pepper and rosemary
  4. Heat fully until you get desired texture (sometimes I let them crisp a tad)
  5. Serve immediately with side dish
