Baby Formula
Baby Formula
As a rule of thumb, most doctors agree that breast milk is absolutely, hands-down the best option for babies.
That being said, there are reasons that a mom might not be able to nurse or pump for baby due to a physical issue or baby’s inability to latch. I absolutely recommend talking to a lactation consultant first and foremost, as well as seeing a Pediatric Chiropractor (I’d love to recommend someone for you if you need!)
If a physical condition completely leaves you unable to nurse or pump, donor milk is definitely an option as well as homemade baby formula, which in my opinion, is the next best option to breastfeeding (whether yours or donor, of course).
So what if you absolutely must buy baby formula? You’re best bet is to avoid popular brands pictured below! Why? They have some pretty awful ingredients you’ll want your baby to avoid!
Ingredients in almost all baby formulas include:
- Glucose Syrup Solids – basically means sugar made from starch, which in the U.S. means corn syrup
- Soy Oil – organic or not, we shouldn’t be consuming soy and baby should definitely not be consuming soy, a known hormone disruptor, amongst other things
- Whey Protein Concentrate - the process of extracting the whey protein denatures it and makes it much more toxic for consumption. The heating and drying process removes its probiotic ability
- Palm Oil Or Palm Olein: you really have to know if it’s expeller pressed or not which is often undisclosed
- Brown rice syrup: typically a substitute in soy-free formulas but babies shouldn’t consume rice due to its arsenic exposure (very toxic)
- Lycopene: this is produced with toluene, a derivative of benzene, a neurotoxin
Why they add these ingredients in baby formula? Did you know that new moms are given samples of baby formula that contain these ingredients??
I don’t know but I’m very thankful to companies that truly care about the quality of ingredients.
Some better options:
This is odd because there is no “perfect” formula made in the USA. Most of the cleaner options out there still use certain methods that are not great so the top 2 options mentioned here are European because, unfortunately, they ban the use of most of the ingredients listed above in their STANDARD baby formula!
This is what I’d consider if I needed to!
At the end of the day mamas, feeding baby is most important! I always love to share everything I can so you are empowered to choose!
